Momma’s Coming Home
Grab a tissue.
When we received the news my mother’s kidney cancer had spread to her brain, we knew time was a gift. We all made sure we told Momma everything we wanted her to know, all of which she already knew.
A few weeks before she passed, I sent her this poem.
“Momma’s Coming Home”
“Lord, through all generations
You’ve always been our home.”
I’ll never forget the morning
Momma read these words to me
In the home where she’d raised
So lovingly her precious family.
It sat right next to the house
Where her mother passed unexpectedly,
So she turned to God’s Word
Where she found His comforting:
“Lord, through all generations,
You’ve always been our home.”
A reminder of His love and grace
Our family has always known
Thanks to the ancestors before us
Who declared Jesus for their home,
A foundation that can’t be shaken,
And a legacy to carry on.
As we children moved up in life,
She’d work hours by our sides.
No blood, sweat, tears, or strife,
But much love and laughter inside
The houses she helped turn into homes
Where we would raise children of our own.
Momma was there all along
Sharing in every joy we’ve ever known.
“Lord, through all generations,
You’ve always been our home.”
A promise of His love and grace
To our children we strive to make known
Thanks to the ancestors before us
Who declared Jesus for their home,
A foundation that can’t be shaken,
And a legacy to carry on.
Now my momma’s time is fading
And it shakes us to our core.
Many nights we’ve spent praying
With our faces down to the floor.
Even when there’s no understanding,
God, we know Your Word is true:
It’s not her home she’s leaving,
Lord, she’s coming home to you.
“Lord, through all generations
You’ve always been our home.”
A promise of His love and grace
To help us left behind push on.
Thanks to the ancestors before us
Who declared Jesus for their home,
A foundation that can’t be shaken,
And a legacy to carry on.
Finding the words to say thank you
For deeds unnumbered, love unsurpassed
Seems unimaginable, impossible to do
For a momma and Sheshe so amazing
Whose family loves you as we do.
From those who heard you His praises sing,
The best thing I can think to say to you:
Thanks to your testimony, home is Heaven
For all of your descendants too.
“Lord, through all generations
You’ve always been our home.”
A promise of His love and grace,
Momma, you have always made known
Thanks to the ancestors before us
Who declared Jesus for their home,
A foundation that can’t be shaken,
Your legacy we will carry on.
